Descendants of the Sun

Descendants of the Sun (Hangul: 태양의 후예) is a 2016 South Korean television series starring Song Joong-ki, Song Hye-kyo, Jin Goo, and Kim Ji-won. This drama tells the story of doctors stationed in the war zone of Urk, and follows the love story that develops between a surgeon (Kang Mo-yeon played by Song Hye-kyo) and a Special Forces officer (Yoo Shi-jin played by Song Joong-ki), both elite in their respective fields. The story tracks both their personal and professional struggles while exploring issues about the value of life. This drama was incredibly popular with the final episode giving a TRP of 38.8% viewership rating nationwide and 41.6% in the capital area according to Nielsen Korea.

Song Joong Ki experienced a tremendous growth in his popularity throughout Asia and the drama established him as a top Hallyu star. He plays the role of Yoo Shi-Jin a.k.a. Big Boss – the team leader of Alpha Team, an elite Special Forces unit in South Korea. He is from a military background and highly respects his father, who is honorably discharged as a Sergeant Major. Possessing outstanding academic and physical abilities, he graduated from the Korea Military Academy and is currently a Captain in the army. Shi-jin is a loyal soldier who goes all out to defend his country’s honor but in life, he is an easy-going and witty man who likes to joke around.

Song Hye Kyo plays the role of doctor Kang Mo-Yeon in this drama. She plays the role of a Cardio-thoracic Specialist who works at Haesung Hospital. She is a woman who believes that competence overrules connections but on the other hand she is hit by the harsh reality of life again that she cannot go anywhere without any connections. She stands firmly by her principles and is not afraid to admit her mistakes. She portrays the role of an independent woman who doesn’t live off other people. She is a woman with self- confidence and is totally capable of achieving her goals without any connections. Her hard work in drama makes us fall in deeply in love with her.
